How to make energy bars at home

While buying energy bars or granola bars from the market can burn a hole in your pocket, why not making some yourself? That way, you can customize your ingredients and not worry about having something in your energy bar that you’re not fond of.

Granola bars are healthy substitutes for any meal of the day. Since they are rich in antioxidants from the dry fruits and nuts and contain no sugar, you can munch on them as snacks without any worries.

Energy bars are quite filling and can be consumed on the go, hence are very efficient substitutes for long meals on a busy workday. They can be prepared with ingredients mostly available in your kitchen.


Plain oats – 1 cup
Puffed rice (murmura) – 1/2 cup
Dried coconut shaving – 2 tbsp
Nuts (almonds and peanuts) – 4 tbsp
Seeds (flaxseed and sesame seeds) – 2 tbsp
Dates and raisins (chopped) – 3 tbsp
Brown sugar or jaggery – 1/2 cup
Butter/ghee – 1 tbsp


  • Grease a baking tray and keep aside
  • Roast the oats and puffed rice separately for about 2 minutes each and keep in a large bowl.
  • Roast the nuts, and coconut shaving for about 2 minutes and add to the bowl of oats.
  • To this bowl add the raisins, chopped dates and roasted seeds of your choice, and a pinch of salt and mix well.
  • Melt some jaggery in a pan of hot ghee, and pour it in with the dry ingredients.
  • Pour the mixture to the tray and press it all down firmly.
  • Now shove the tray in a pre-heated oven and let it bake for about 15 mins at 150degree Celsius.
  • After it’s done baking take out the tray and let it cool completely. Cut the granola in your desired shapes and serve/eat/store! 😃

Things to note

  • Do not use masala oats, just get the plain white ones for this recipe
  • Also, I used puffed rice instead of rice crisps. If you can get hold of a packet of rice crisps, use them.
  • If you are using fresh juicy and soft dates, you can grind them at a go and add to the mixture, in that case, use a little less jaggery. But if you have dried dates chop them up and add them to the mixture.
  • Most recipes use honey, but I chose jaggery instead. Honey is healthy food on its own, but not when heated or cooked, on the other hand, jaggery can be cooked without developing any unhealthy aspect to it.
  • Since there are no artificial preservatives added I used spiced jaggery to increase the shelf life of the bars.
  • You can also crumble up the bar and have it with yoghurt, it’s a beautiful combination, and it will also cut down the sweetness, in case you are not fond of very sweet foods.
